New York Times Music Review: Beyond ‘Gangnam,’ the True Wild Heart of K-Pop: BigBang Performs at the Prudential Center Posted by vip4daesung on November 10, 2012

NEWARK — What you have to understand is that “Gangnam Style,” the goofy crossover hit that has given K-pop a global profile — it has even reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 — is still something of an outlier, a lightly ironic sendup of the genre’s eccentricities. But it’s very hard to parody something that gets more outrageous by the day.

If anything, the center of K-pop is far stranger. Take “Crayon,” by G-Dragon, an electro-rave-meets-Southern-hip-hop thumper with a video that makes the excesses of, say, Missy Elliott and Nicki Minaj in that medium look like tiny incremental gains. It is kaleidoscopically weird, hilariously comic and sinisterly effective.

G-Dragon is a member of BigBang, the long-running K-pop boy band, which played its first show in the New York area at the Prudential Center here on Thursday night. He performed “Crayon” early in the night, wearing a jacket with the head of a white tiger attached to the back, a pair of black Air Yeezy 2s and bleached blond hair standing straight up like sheaves of pesticide-soaked wheat.

And that wasn’t even the most energized part of this vibrant show, in which BigBang — G-Dragon, T.O.P., Seungri, Taeyang and Daesung — performed more than two dozen songs wearing almost as many outfits, and in unusual setups: before “How Gee,” which could pass for an early Teddy Riley production, members of the group took to the stage on gilded Segways and lowrider bicycles.

Over the years G-Dragon has emerged as the flamboyant center of the group. He has a soft voice but a shrieking exterior. He’s balanced out by T.O.P., who raps nimbly in a basso profundo voice and has a regal bearing, even walking around the stage wielding a scepter. Taeyang is the group’s battery, a compact dancer and singer with a tender voice. Daesung has a totally credible R&B voice — during a solo song, dancers affixed wings to his back, and he soared over the crowd on a wire — and the baby-faced Seungri plays the straight man.

At one point Seungri called G-Dragon a genius and told him, “I love you.” It can be a challenge to dig up subtext in K-pop, which gleams with outlandish visuals and candy-coated sentiments, but maybe this was penance of a sort for the recent romance scandals that have dogged Seungri in Asian tabloids.

K-pop can be so heavily referential as to be post-referential. The band wove an interpolation of the signature guitar crunch of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” into a song. Multiple members of the group beatbox, a technique that’s hardly, if ever, used in mainstream American hip-hop, its birthplace, but is a routine part of the K-pop star arsenal. Late in the night Taeyang, heavily tattooed, with long braids and a bandanna worn just so, tore his tank top in two, Usher-style, and did a back flip, which is probably beyond Usher’s skill set.

(Throughout, BigBang was backed by a cadre of dancers, the men emphasizing break dancing.)

BigBang’s more recent material is bubblier and more frenetic, like “Fantastic Baby” (the chorus of which, to be fair, does bear a passing resemblance to the buzzing beat of “Gangnam Style”), but toward the end of the show, the group devoted time to more blatantly romantic fare like “Monster” and “Cafe.”

This show was the first of two nights at the arena, part of a short but loud American tour for an act that, while it has a big following in this country, has not yet achieved American pop success. At the end of the night, during a long encore, Taeyang kept singing the hook from Alicia Keys and Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind,” as if he could single-handedly change that.

[NEWS] G-Dragon & Psy Appear on Billboard Chart Simultaneously! (120922)

On September 21, Psy‘s “Gangnam Style” jumped to the 11th place on the US Billboard’s Hot 100 chart from last week’s 64th place. This is the highest a Korean artist has ever made on Billboard chart in the history of Korean music industry. Moreover, Psy topped the US iTunes Top Songs chart, proving the world’s fascination with “Gangnam Style.”

While YG Entertainment is still getting used to one of its artists’ sudden worldwide popularity, G-Dragon also made a surprise debut on the Billboard chart. G-Dragon’s solo album “One of A Kind” debuted on the Billboard 200 chart at 161th place. Prior to G-dragon, BoA, Big Bang, and TaeTiSeo made it toe the Billboard 200 chart. G-Dragon’s “One of A Kind” also made it to the top of World Albums chart and 6th place on the Heatseeker’s chart.
As a result, YG Entertainment now has two of its artists on the Billboard in both singles and albums chart. Currently, Psy is staying in the United States, focusing on promoting “Gangnam Style.” G-dragon recently made a comeback on SBS “Inkigayo” and officially started his promotional cycle.
Wow! They both so great! ^^

[NEWS] YG Entertainment's Triple Threat for PSY, G-Dragon & 2NE1! (120829)

YG Entertainment and its prowess is growing every day.

As Psy's "Gangnam Style" music video surpassed the 60 million views on YouTube, Big Bang G-Dragon's new single, "One of a Kind," was also released on August 25, now recording 6.4 million views in a matter of 3 days.

Justin Bieber's management company recently reached out to Psy and took a meeting with him. 2NE1's Los Angeles concert featured a surprise performance with Will.i.am and interest from American companies. It is clear that YG is at the forefront of stepping out into the international markets.

Big Bang, 2NE1, Psy, Se7en, Epik High, and Gummy all line the YG label and they were always influential but it was never at this height. Even with Big Bang and 2NE1 at the top of their respective piles, the label had not been at the center of this much attention until "Gangnam Style" blew up everywhere. As Psy is being catapulted to world star status, the synergy is exacting its power on YG and their international reach.

As the Dokdo issue flares up again, YG is relieved from having to rely on the Japanese market for a large portion of their commercial success. Psy was originally scheduled to go into the Japanese market but as his song went viral, the doors to the American market opened first. He visited with some industry people in LA, after 10 days in the States and he came back with possibilities of good news.

Before the land dispute got ugly, YG already completed their Big Bang World Tour in Japan as well as the "YG Family: concert, which drew a total of 300,000 people in Japan and earned about $49 million. 2NE1 still has the Japanese portion of their World Tour left but there is currently no news of any ticket cancellations or refunds. Big Bang will continue their world tour into North and South America as well as Europe. As Psy begins to circle the world, YG will score its most profitable year yet in 2012.

This helped the YG stock prices for obvious reasons. It's been on an increasing trend since "Gangnam Style" debuted, having gone up approximately $165 million over the past two months. The reason being Psy's rise in status around the world. YG believes that the synergy to be expected from the Psy-Big Bang-2NE1 triangle will be immense and the recent success is because of this new power combination.

Psy is not an idol singer. He's not like the other boy and girl groups that have been dominating the market recently. His world fame now will most likely affect the way that the Korean music industry sees itself as well. A professor at Sungshin Women's University said, "The Psy phenomenon has confirmed that the variety in K-Pop can be a key to success rather than the formulaic creation of idol groups."

YG can also stand to benefit from the fame of "Gangnam Style" on merchandise. A German shopping mall has already started selling t-shirts with the "Gangnam Style" motif and though YG is not currently posing a problem, they should be gearing to take advantage of this opportunity and go into fashion with the recent increase in popularity as well.
Hwaiting GD, & also Big Bang^o^

[NEWS] G-Dragon′s ′One Of A Kind′ gets over 5 Million Views in Two Days! (120827)

Big Bang’s G-Dragon′s One of a Kind may be following the footsteps of Psy’s Gangnam Style, having gained more than 5 million views since its release.

The music video for G-Dragon’s newest single One of a Kind gained 5 million views as of August 27, only two days after its release on August 25.
One of a Kind, a trendy hip-hop single that stands out with unique sounds, serves as an intro to G-Dragon’s upcoming solo album, and was composed by G-Dragon and Choice37, the YG producer who composed G-Dragon’s A Boy and Big Bang’s Bad Boy. The song will not be released officially as a separate single; it was only meant to be released in music video form.

Through lyrics such as ‘A talented bear, more a fox than a bear / A stuck up guy, so expensive’, ‘Young & rich / That’s me’, ‘I’m sorry I’m so popular’ and ‘Please look on kindly, don’t curse / Please look on cutely / Love me’, he tells those who still hold prejudices against him to loosen up and be a bit more generous.
The music video is glittered with designer items, living up to G-Dragon’s name in fashion. Luxury accessories and clothing from such brands as Chrome Hearts and Chanel dress G-Dragon up in a lavish and attractive style.

Taeyang makes a special cameo appearance near the end, showing the friendship the two Big Bang members boast. Taeyang is also flanked by Choice37, YG’s trainer Hwang Ssa Bu and other crew members that helped G-Dragon be the man he is now to show their support for the singer’s comeback.

The music video was directed by Seo Hyun Seung, who directed Big Bang’s Fantastic Baby, G-Dragon’s Heartbreakerand other YG music videos.

G-Dragon is our One of A Kind, Hwaiting^^

[NEWS] Teen Top’s Changjo & Ricky talks about BIGBANG on Elle Girl Magazine! (120823)

Teen Top’s Changjo @ Elle Girl Magazine Interview!

Is there a new style of music that you’d like to try?
Changjo: “A song with a woman that tells a story like a musical like Big Bang Taeyang sunbae-nim did.”

There are a lot of members of Teen Top who like Big Bang, right?
Changjo: “We like them a lot. If you asked us to pick a senior artist that we really admire, most of us would pick Big Bang. Before we shoot a music video, we try to immitate the gestures and expressions that they do. The angles that Taeyang sunbae-nim makes while dancing, and even the way he moves his mouth while wearing sunglasses.”

What do have a big interest in these days?
Changjo: “Skateboarding. We saw the dancer hyungs riding them and it looked fun so we started to also. This is one thing we didn’t copy Big Bang at. Don’t misunderstand (laughs).”

Teen Top’s Ricky @ Elle Girl Magazine Interview!

You are a fan of Big Bang too, right?

Ricky: “Yes, I watch a lot of T.O.P sunbae-nim’s stuff (acting). There is an expression he makes while closing his eyes and it’s really handsome, so I saved the picture on my iPad. He is handsome and good at everything.”
Great to know that they praised BIGBANG^^

[NEWS] G-Dragon’s Bentley on The high prices for the stars’ coveted vehicles! (120719)

There are a few cars that are always in style no matter what the current trends are, and today’s Hallyu stars know exactly which.

Even the more ‘unpopular’ cars instantly become the most-searched items on internet portal sites once a huge celebrity is spotted in one of them. The cars driven by top stars in hit drama series also tend to become hot commodities, so it comes as no surprise that the stars’ personal vehicles are also making headline news.

A representative from professional used vehicle site CarPR explained, “Once the vehicle of a celebrity becomes written about, we receive a lot more calls and questions about the make and model of the car. There is increasingly more demand from consumers who are looking to purchase the same vehicles as the celebrities, but used, at a reduced cost.”

The cars of the celebrities were once considered unattainable ‘dream cars’, but that is no longer the case. Purchasing used vehicles allows individuals to obtain the cars of the celebrities at discount prices.

So how much does the average person spend have to drive a used model of the stars’ vehicles?

To start, sexy singer Lee Hyori drives a Mercedes Benz E-Class, and in Korea a new 2012 model goes for around $121,800 US. However in the case of a used model, the 2010 E-Class can be found for about $51,000 – $54,000 USD.

Actress Kim Tae Hee who is currently an advertising model for the Toyota Camry actually drives aBMW 5-series in her day to day life. A top of the line brand new model is being sold for $95,700 USD, however, a used 2008 model can be purchased for around $26,000 USD.

Stylish idol star G-Dragon of Big Bang is well-known to have a white Bentley GT, a vehicle that is priced at $252,000 USD for a brand new model. A used 2005 model would cost the average driver anywhere around $76,000 USD.

And actress Yoo In Na whorecently announced she was dating actor Ji Hyun Woo drives a sportyAudi A6, a vehicle priced at $73,000 USD for a new model. A used 2011 ‘Full Option’ A6 is priced at around $43,000 USD.

“Many of the celebrity vehicles that are in high demand by consumers are foreign imports,” the CarPR rep continued. “They are high-priced vehicles that are unique and a rare sight.”

“Because of the high prices and costly maintenance fees involved, the cars driven by these celebrities have high market price reductions and in the case of used vehicles, they are being sold at less than 50% of the new model prices,” the rep added. “Instead of purchasing cars for the sake of mimicking top stars, it is best to purchase cars that are easy to maintain and fall within your individual budget range.”

He's such a rich guy for us... keke~~^o^

K-Pop fashion icon G-Dragon of boy band Big Bang, is starting to make waves internationally – look out for his heavily ripped denim and colorful biker jackets.

Kwon Ji-yong, better known by his stage name G-Dragon, is the leader of South Korea boy band, Big Bang. He is a recording artist, songwriter, producer and model. In recent years, he has become known as much for his look as his music and he is starting to make fashion waves internationally.

Big BangBig Bang debuted in 2006 and are known for their hip-pop music and energetic freestyle dancing. Like many pop stars, the band's five members have received plenty of attention based on their individual fashion styling. Unlike other K-Pop groups who adopt a uniform look, the members of Big Bang incorporate their individual styles into a single concept in a group format.

Key terms for the band include hi-top sneakers, brightly colored skinny jeans, leather trousers, bold jewelry and accessories. Big Bang's latest music video, Fantastic Baby, created a surreal feel with expressive styling, the use of hyper colours and dramatic hair and make-up.

G-Dragon: Magazine EditorialG-Dragon's styling is theatrical and often features tribal references such as feathers and animal prints. Accents of black are key.

G-Dragon: Hair and make-upHis signature grooming looks is a defined brow and smokey eye make-up. Hair is often bleached and styled into huge quiffs. Otherwise, his hair is worn down and combed forward, with a straightened fringe.

[NEWS/PHOTOS] G-Dragon's Tattoo Fashion! (120623)

Group ‘Big Bang’ has always received public attention. It is fun not only to listen to their new music, but also to watch their new style. Among others, G-Dragon is the fashion icon of Bigbang. He is considered best fashionista in Idols. The clothes which he wore, the shoes on which he put have always been major issues.

Then how about his style in daily life? Expectably, STYLISH~

The pants covered his knee, the high socks with star pattern. Who would dare to try wearing these style? At the beginning of June, this was him on Rodeo street in Apgujeong. It’s a place where hot people go. Most people just can’t attract other people’s attention. Of course, G-Dragon, can. His unique fashion, can.

That day, G-Dragon’s fashion was ‘funky’. His pants struck the eye of many people. Long-short black pants with white cross stripes on the upper part and high socks with white star pattern. No one could try wearing these style except for GD.But the point of that day was his tattoos. He had letterings on his both arms. On his right arm, he also had heart tattoo by Keith Harig who is graffiti artist. And there was dragon ball on his left shoulder. It means his name, G-Dragon.

His act of freedom was also

unconventional. He spent time alone without the other members. He wasn’t conscious of public eyes, he passed Rodeo street in Apgujeong naturally. And he met his friends and talked to them with his bright smile.

Nowadays Bigbang has had their world tour in Japan and met fans. And next month, they will hold their world tour in 7 cities around the world. We hope that 2012 will be ‘fantastic’ and ‘monster’(good meaning) to them.

G-Dragon's Everyday Tattoo Fashion [NEWS/PHOTO]

“Are you wathing, Donnie?” …GD, his ordinary tattoo style.

“Fire hair, seaweed hair, gore fashion…”

No one could try wearing these style except for GD.

But the point of that day was his tattoos. He had letterings on his both arms. On his right arm, he also had heart tattoo by Keith Harig who is graffiti artist. And there was dragon ball on his left shoulder. It means his name, G-Dragon.

His act of freedom was also unconventional. He spent time alone without the other members. He wasn’t conscious of public eyes, he passed Rodeo street in Apgujeong naturally. And he met his friends and talked to them with his bright smile.
