Leading up to its Newark shows, is Big Bang ready to bring K-pop to the U.S. ? Posted by vip4daesung on November 9, 2012

Big Bang, the South Korean pop group that is enormously popular throughout Asia, is trying to live up to its name on these shores as well.

Judging by ticket sales for their U.S. debut this month, the boy band that blends hip-hop, high fashion and theatrics into a polished package is off to a good start. Tickets for their Alive Tour — at the Prudential Center and Anaheim's Honda Center — sold out within a few hours in September, prompting their management to add dates.

Sure, they can sell out arenas in cities with large Asian-American populations, but are these pop sensations the harbinger of a larger Korean pop trend in the U.S.?

Not likely, says Amy He, editor in chief at the Manhattan-based Korean pop culture website Seoul Beats. "I think their following is a niche on this side of the globe. A lot of the Western press is saying K-pop is the biggest thing right now. I don't think that's true," said He.

American fans first need to embrace more Asian-American artists, something they haven't done yet, said He. "It's not like there aren't Asian-American artists out there. It's more that we have to start with American acts like Far East Movement before we can accept K-pop," she said.

One recent exception is the Korean artist Psy, who became a momentary household name last month when he had everyone from Britney Spears to the U.S. Navy mimicking his "Gangnam Style" dance moves. But Psy is an outlier, said He. "He's not representative of the Korean pop market. He's not boy or girl group material. He's more subversive, cheeky and sarcastic," she said.

K-pop is short for the genre of pop music churned out by the big three Korean record labels, which has been a cultural trend-setter in Asia. Teens from the Philippines to Taiwan pine after these well-coiffed boy and girl groups.

Breaking into the United States has not been as straightforward. Rain made it to People magazine's Most Beautiful People list in 2007 and continues to tour here. Girl group 2EN1 is linked up with producer Will.i.am, and played the Prudential Center in August.

"A lot of the groups have tried to court the market here, but it's a very expensive market. It's not as guaranteed they can fill up a big arena," said He. In Asia, these acts are easier to market because of a common shared Asian culture. "A lot of these boy and girl groups represent an aspirational product. They represent a lifestyle, glamour and trendiness," she said.

He, who attended 2EN1's August concert in Newark, said the crowd was about half Korean-American. "It was a pretty diverse crowd. Teens are finding them through social media and YouTube. But I don't think it's an overlap with the Justin Bieber crowd," she said.

Among recent popular K-pop acts, Big Bang has the most Westernized sound. The quintet, whose members also have solo careers, mix hip-hop, R&B, rock and electronic styles and cite Wu-Tang Clan and Michael Jackson as musical influences.

For Stella Kim, who bought $325 VIP tickets to catch the Big Bang show in Newark on Friday, her love of Korean pop music didn't start until college and has been a way to connect with her roots. "I grew up in a Caucasian neighborhood in Rockland County [Tappan, N.Y.]. My Korean was really bad in high school. I always wanted to be a part of Korean culture and didn't know where to begin," said the 24-year-old, now in Manhattan, who is a marketing manager for celebrity fragrance lines.

Kim, who is also a fan of Lady Gaga, Jay-Z and Eminem, said she loves Big Bang's fashion, their genre-mixing sound and that they write some of their own songs. "Each one of them has their own unique characteristics. They work together so well, and all of them shine in their own light," she said.

She's betting that Big Bang is likely to make the biggest impact here. "I think a lot of Korean groups are trying to come into the American market," she said. "I'm not saying this just as a fan, but [Big Bang's] music and style has the most potential here."

Sound Check's Live Review: Big Bang draws throngs to impressive North American debut at Honda Center Posted by ygfan25 on November 4, 2012

Imagine a young group whose first-ever performance in North America plays out before a near-capacity crowd at Honda Center. That’s exactly the dream-gig scenario for Big Bang, a South Korean male quintet that thrilled an audience of mostly teen girls and twentysomething fans Friday night in Anaheim.

Formed in 2006, the well-marketed troupe has been expanding its brand since returning from a two-year hiatus in 2011 intent on reaching audiences beyond its native land and Japan, where the singing and dancing K-Pop sensation has racked up plenty of hits both together and via solo projects. Now the group, the sole Asian ensemble to win the World Act prize at the MTV Europe Music Awards, is on its first world tour, visiting 25 cities in 16 countries, including China, Thailand and Indonesia, plus a stop at the U.K.’s Wembley Arena.

For just under 2½ hours Friday night, the guys in Big Bang – G-Dragon, T.O.P., Taeyang, Daesung and Seungri – plus a dozen supporting dancers and a seven-member backing band (sadly positioned high above the stage and difficult to see) delivered an energetic, bombastic performance that had fans on their feet all night, screaming and cheering for more. And when they exhausted their material, they simply performed several of the most popular songs (including “Bad Boy”) again.

Like a long line of boy bands before it – from the Osmonds in the early ’70s to Duran Duran in the ’80s and Big Time Rush and One Direction this decade – Big Bang provides its youthful audience with a lively concert experience, evidenced by obviously thrilled fans from all over Southern California and elsewhere. Faced with only these dates or another pair in New Jersey next week, some admirers traveled from Las Vegas, Denver and further away to snap photos, hold up handmade signs proclaiming their affection for a favorite member and generally clamor for their heroes at one of these two Anaheim shows.

Among the most appealing songs of the night were the spirited dance track “Fantastic Baby” (with its “dan dan dan dan dance” chorus), the R&B-flavored “Lies” and the infectious pop of “Monster,” which segued perfectly into the modern urban groove of “Feeling.” In addition to the members’ vocal talents, the production for this Alive Galaxy Tour 2012 – designed by Laurieann Gibson, who helped concoct Lady Gaga’s Monster’s Ball dazzler – showcased sharp choreography and special effects like pyrotechnics, large video screens embedded in the stage, and platforms that lifted or lowered the gang on cue, all of which added to the larger-than-life impact.

Granted, there was little in the way of originality in Big Bang’s performance. But the West Coast debut proved to be a fun, well-executed show sure to please patient American fans who had waited years to see them in the flesh. And seeing as both of these Honda Center shows attracted such massive audiences, the aptly named group could soon expand its reach to more stateside points.

Big Bang sells out three shows in Hong Kong Posted by vip4daesung on September 26, 2012

Korean boy band Big Bang will play to 35,000 fans at three sold-out concerts in December - the biggest audience for an international group since the Hong Kong Stadium stopped holding concerts in 1994.

Tickets for the first two shows by the five K-pop superstars at AsiaWorld-Expo arena were sold out in an hour when public sales opened last week.

An additional show was added and all the tickets were snapped up within three hours yesterday morning. But their sales were eclipsed by solo act Lady Gaga, who played to four sold-out houses at the same venue in May during her Born This Way Ball tour.

Big Bang fans queued up overnight outside Tom Lee music stores, which sold tickets at HK$480 to HK$1,680 - higher than Gaga's priciest tickets of HK$1,580.

"You can see the rise of K-pop. Youngsters love it," music critic Wong Chi-chung said. "Live concerts have become the way out for singers after the digitalisation of music … it's a good thing. Live music influences people and facilitates cultural exchange."

The band will perform in Hong Kong from December 8 to 10. Between May and June, its 13 concerts in Japan were attended by 150,000 people.

[NEWS] Big Bang expected to earn more in royalties with Additional Japan Dome Concert! (120925)

The group originally planned to hold concerts in two locations: the Osaka Kyosera Dome from November 23-24 and in the Tokyo Dome on December 5. As an increasing number of local fans requested more concerts, however, it came to add another concert at the Fukuoka Yahoo! Japan Dome to be held on December 22.

With the addition, Big Bang not only broke records in concert profits, but also in audience numbers.

The final 'Alive Galaxy Tour' takes 3 places in Dome
Analyst Jin Heung Guk of Hyundai Securities said, "The decision to add another concert to Big Bang′s Japan tour increased the audience the group is expected to draw from 120,000 to 200,000 for the latter half of the year. The royalties from Big Bang for the first quarter of 2013, which were originally estimated to be 6.4 billion won, have also increased to 10.6 billion, and the business profits that were originally expected to be about 9.1 billion won have increased to 10.7 billion."

Even while the Korean wave continues to stumble over the Dokdo issue, Big Bang has proved it still stands strong.

It thus proved that bad diplomatic relations between Korea and Japan only have a small effect on the popularity of Korean singers in Japan.

[NEWS] Concert months away but Big Bang draws the crowd! (120729)

KUALA LUMPUR: Despite their planned maiden Malaysian concert still about three months away, K-pop group Big Bang is already “drawing” crowds here.
Thousands of fans from all over the country came to the Fahrenheit 88 shopping mall to purchase tickets for the “Big Bang Alive Galaxy Tour 2012” Malaysian concert, scheduled for Oct 27 at Stadium Merdeka.
A fan Tey Ching Ee, 26, arrived as early as Friday from Malacca and queued up overnight to make sure she was first in line to buy the tickets.
“Big Bang is one of the few Korean acts who write their own music and lyrics,” she said.
Maxine Ng, 20, from Sabah, said many fans could relate to Big Bang through their songs.
“As members of the band freely pour out their life experiences in their songwriting, many listeners can relate to them on a personal level,” she added.
Iefa Athifah Ieda Mestika, 20, from Johor, could not wait to see the band in their fashion-forward ensembles.
“They have such an amazing sense of style. I cannot wait to see them work their dance moves in those trendy costumes,” she said.
Big Bang, which comprises G-Dragon, T.O.P, Taeyang, Daesung and Seungri, took the music industry by storm in 2007 when their first singleLies reached number one on the Korean charts and remained for seven consecutive weeks.
But the boys’ unique hip hop and R&B-influenced music style is not the only thing fans are looking forward to in the upcoming show.
Besides making history as the first-ever outdoor concert held across Asia, the band’s one-night-only performance is estimated to cost more than RM4mil.
Tickets priced at RM388-RM688 have been sold out, while tickets from RM98 to RM288 are available via RedTix (visit www.airasiaredtix.com or call 03-8775 4666) and TicketCharge (visit www.ticketcharge.com.my or call 03-9222 8811).

Big Bang visited China for the first time in six years of their debut. They wore luxurious opening costumes and performed “Still Alive,” “Tonight,” and “Hands Up.”
